Melbourne Cup night at Sandown always a big occasion. Nothing like arriving for the meeting in the Channel 10 Chopper. Plus, the Sponsor’s flag was delivered by parachute. Year was 1993. Cup was won by star NSW sprinter Silver Chisel. He came from second last early off box four in a brilliant win. Trained by a super bloke from Tahmoor former Coal miner John Fleming. Found an extract from my book Fifty Fabulous Years I wrote with the late John Weatherhead.
Ask The Breeder – He was always an extremely fast dog. From memory, didn’t like Wenty that much. Maybe that played its part in only being a reserve for the heats? He certainly loved Sandown though and blew them away. It was a sensational mix of blood for John Fleming. He bred some great dogs – Silver Cassie, was a real fave!
Ian Hilditch– Litter brother Silver Spice ran 3rd to Mancunian Girl in an Australian Cup.
Cheryl Pirani– Great story.
John Green– Another great story …
