Des Dooley -Mid sixties is close enough. I have a Sandown racebook from July 1968 that lists rug 2 as checks.

Barry Lingham – I thought the change was around the time we turned to decimal currency . The two changes, had my poor old mum’s mind in a spin. I remember standing at the top end of the betting ring . just where the weight variation board was located, telling her what +.6 was. or what – .8 meant. We would go to Sandown most Thursday nights. I’m still not sure she had a handle on it, even 12 months later.
