After all these years it appears the vivacious Elke Sommer wasn’t Sandown’s first choice of Hollywood movie star to promote the Melbourne Cup in 1979. It was none other than Raquel Welch. Regardless of the outcome it worked a treat as the front page of the Herald and other mainstream daily’s could get enough of the German born Star. Interesting to note the Herald was selling for 12 cents. Sadly, we lost Raquel Welch in February 2023 at age 82.
