Wonderful chaser for Peter and Marie Wishart. Dedication well fancied in the 1984 Melbourne Cup started 7/2. Had no luck behind Rustic Venture, Eaglehawk Star and Proud Paul. Loved Sandown Park. Pete and Marie still going strong in their early 80’s.
Sadly both Marie and Peter have passed Marie in 2023 and Peter in January 2025.
It’s with sadness I would like acknowledge passing of Peter Wishart. He passed away last Friday January 31st aged 86.
Pete or Whizz as we like to call him trained greyhounds for over 50 years spanning from the 1960’s to 2018. He started in the Warrandyte area, but spent most his life in North Ringwood.
The best greyhound he had was Dedication who started as one of the favourites in the 1984 Melbourne Cup, which was won by Rustic Venture. He also had success with the versatile New South Wales sprinter-stayer Lilley Criminal. However he trained many dogs for many winners in a long association with a lead and collar.
He was a long time member of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club as well as the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association. He was also a life member at Healesville and one of the driving forces behind the club before it began racing.
He was close friends with the late Geoff Dawson, Mick Gibilisco, Eddie Caruana, John Stephens and in particular Norm McCullagh and Des Fegan. Pete had many friends in the industry.
Whizz is also remembered as a very good footballer for Mitcham, a roof tiler and a good bloke who was never short of a story or an opinion particularly on Football and Greyhounds. Pictured with Pete, Eddie and Norm and a couple of pics of Dedication with Peter and his late wife Marie
